Direct Recruitment Into Laboratories
Faculty are allowed to recruit students directly to their laboratories to immediately begin work on a thesis or dissertation project . Such students must be approved for admission into the CMB program by the Admissions Committee and the Graduate School. Such students must be supported by funds other than CMB GTAs or Fellowships. These students do not participate in the rotation program.
To protect the interests of the student in the unlikely event that the student and faculty member were incompatible, such students would have the opportunity to change laboratories at the end of the spring semester if they so desire. The laboratory which supported the student through the first year would have no hold on the student and would not be reimbursed for their support during the first year. Of course, the laboratory would have no further obligation regarding funding of a student who left the laboratory.
